Useful Info About Vacations In Loch Ness, Highlands

Scotland is a world class country to spend a few days, or a longer vacation. It is incredibly popular with hikers, hill-walkers, mountain climbers, ramblers and others who enjoy this kind  of vacation. The vast majority tourists enjoy the varied and pretty countryside which has a big selection of sites to visit including some rather well known,  and awe-inspiring, areas of outstanding beauty. One of these sites which is, most likely the most famous is Loch Ness and the famous Loch Ness Monster. In the article below I introduce this most interesting Loch Ness as an exciting vacation destination.

Intensely deep and moody, Loch Ness is a huge stretch of water situated in the imposing Highlands of Scotland not a large distance away from Inverness (see below). Surrounded by the most beautiful countryside, which features lush areas of forest, huge heather clad mountains, the loch is most famous for being the home of the Loch Ness Monster known as Nessie.

Nessie is first documented in history in the autobiography of Saint Columba. It is said that Saint Columba forced a monster back into Loch Ness after the beast had been attacking one of his monks.

At the beginning of the 20 th century a new road was constructed running along the banks of Loch Ness. After only a few years in 1934 stories relating to sightings of a monster of epic proportions began to feature in the media.

Inverness, commonly called the capital city of the Highlands of Scotland, was ceremoniously granted city status in 2001 and at this moment in time is the only city in the region. Uniquely (in the United Kingdom) Inverness has no statutory boundaries which causes problems for folk estimating population. The problem is made worse by the fact that the city’s population is increasing dramatically, Inverness has the United Kingdom’s highest growth rate. One thing we can state with some certainty is that Inverness has a very rather population, in 2008 the Telegraph ranked Inverness fifth out of 189 cities in the UK for its quality of life. Therefore we can state that Inverness is a pretty cool city in which to spend some time and this is probably one of the facts which make Inverness amazingly popular with tourists. Importantly there is a large number of guesthouses and hotels in Inverness with most of it being bookable online.

One important fact you should remember is that the airport for Inverness is, approximately, seven miles to the east at Dalcross. It is relatively easy to hail a cab or catch a bus to the busy but small airport which is not too expensive. If you require a map of the area then you will discover that they are free at the tourist office, in the center of town. While you are staying in Inverness you should make a note to visit Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the ’stone of tubs’ and Mercat Cross especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an interactive experience which is immensely enjoyable.

If you are thinking about taking a Scottish vacation based in Inverness and Loch Ness then you will discover Inverness bed and breakfast online by using the search “Inverness hotel accommodation” or “Inverness bed and breakfast” into your favorite search engine (the inverted commas can help a great deal).
